Date : 2025-11-03

City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) held a naming ceremony for the Wofoo Foundation Joseph Lee Multi-function Hall in the Lee Shau Kee Student Residence Village in Ma On Shan on 20 October 2025. The ceremony honoured generous donations from Dr Joseph Lee Chung-tak, Founder and Chairman of the Wofoo Foundation, and acknowledged his consistent support and profound care for CityUHK over the years.

A passionate advocate for higher education and youth development, Dr Lee has always been a staunch supporter and key partner of CityUHK. In addition to this newly named hall, the “Wofoo Foundation Gallery” in the Run Run Shaw Library and the “Joseph Lee Hall” in the Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin Academic Building are named after Dr Lee or the Wofoo Foundation, in appreciation of Dr Lee’s generous support.

Dr Lee has deep ties with CityUHK. Since joining the Council in 2008, he has held key roles on multiple committees. He is an Honorary Fellow and recipient of an Honorary Doctorate from the University, and he currently serves as a CityUHK Court member, providing valuable insights into the University’s development.

The naming ceremony on 20 October was attended by distinguished guests, including Dr Lee, his family, friends and collaborative partners; Ms Christina Lee, Executive Director of the Wofoo Social Enterprises and CityUHK Court member; Professor Michael Ngai, Council Chairman of CityUHK; Professor Freddy Boey, President and University Distinguished Professor; Professor Anderson Shum Ho-cheung, Vice-President (Research); Professor Chan Chi-hou, Vice-President (Community Engagement); Ms Kathy Chan Yin-ling, Associate Vice-President (Development); Professor Steve Wong Hang, Associate Vice-President (Community Engagement); and other CityUHK Council and Court members.

In his welcoming remarks, Professor Ngai expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Dr Lee for his active engagement with diverse sectors of society and deep commitment to the community. He stated, “Dr Lee has made it his mission to contribute to society. With remarkable foresight, he established the Wofoo Social Enterprises and the Wofoo Foundation in the 1990s. CityUHK sincerely thanks Dr Lee and the Foundation for their unwavering support and profound care over the years, which has enabled the University to continue to nurture outstanding talent contributing meaningfully to society.”

In his address, Dr Lee emphasised the profound significance of the naming ceremony and expressed gratitude to his family for attending this occasion, marking a gathering spanning three generations. He elaborated on the meaning of “Wofoo”, stating “Harmony among people brings prosperity to families; harmony among citizens brings prosperity to the nation”. He thought that harmony between individuals is far more important than material abundance.”

Dr Lee praised CityUHK for its role as an international education hub. “CityUHK shoulders the mission of nurturing talent and cultivating individuals with both moral integrity and capability, who possess a strong sense of well-being. This fosters a society rich in compassion, purpose and hope. I grew up in Kowloon Tong and attended school near CityUHK, where I often gazed upon the Lion Rock. I hope everyone can embody the Lion Rock spirit — caring for neighbours, bringing greater joy to society, and contributing to the development of our country.”

President Boey extended his gratitude to Dr Lee and his family for their generous support. Reflecting on Dr Lee’s remarks, he stated, “We should love our neighbours just as ourselves. Therefore, CityUHK has dedicated itself to community engagement, connecting with nearby communities, especially Kowloon Tong and Sham Shui Po. We recognise the importance of training talent and have taken steps to send many of our students to leading universities worldwide, demonstrating CityUHK’s commitment to internationalisation. We train our students to excel, not just in Hong Kong, but globally.” Thanks to the dedicated support of its stakeholders, CityUHK was named the “Most International University in the World” by Times Higher Education for two consecutive years in 2024 and 2025 and consistently ranks among the world’s top 100 universities in major global university rankings. This recognition underscores the University’s vigorous development, global outlook, commitment to innovation and relentless pursuit of academic excellence.
