Wofoo Neighbour Hub (WNH)’s volunteer team and Mission Healthy Greens (MHG)’s volunteer tutors recently visited Ho Fu Neighbourhood Centre for Senior Citizens for a green-themed service. This event not only brought care and companionship but also specially introduced kokedama (moss ball) home decor, allowing the elderly to make them with their own hands and personally experience the joy and satisfaction of a green lifestyle.
The volunteers carefully guided the elderly in making good use of everyday resources. With just a few materials and small actions, they were able to create fresh and lovely home decorations that beautify their living spaces. During the activity, the elderly focused intently on kneading the moss and wrapping the plants, which not only exercised their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination but also brought them relaxation and a sense of achievement through the hands-on process. Kokedama is both practical and eco-friendly; it helps retain moisture for plants, reducing the frequency of watering, making it easy for the elderly to maintain. At the same time, the green decor helps soothe emotions, enhances the quality of life, and adds a touch of natural vitality to their homes.
This event allowed the elderly to create their own little green creations amidst laughter and joy, enriching their daily lives while feeling the warmth and support of the community. The services of WNH have now expanded from Wong Tai Sin, Tsuen Wan and Sham Shui Po to different districts. We look forward to continuing to reach more community corners, promoting a green lifestyle alongside neighbourhood care.
